The 28th Festival of New Latin American Cinema will open in Havana on December 5 with the film El Laberinto del fauno from Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and will close with Volver, the latest from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar.

The festival will overtake the Havana movie theatres through December 15 and features the latest Latin American cinema competing in the categories for documentaries, fiction, first films, unpublished scripts, posters and animation.

As in previous years, there will also be showings of German, Italian, Spanish, French and Swiss cinema parallel to the competing films.

Speaking at a press conference at Havana’s historic Hotel Nacional, Alfredo Guevara, president of the organizing committee, said that this year for the first time a showing of experimental films will take place during the festival.

A total of 463 films will be shown during the festival and among the many visitors expected are British actor Ralph Fiennes and director Stephen Frears.

Guevara called attention to the conferences to be held entitled, The Audiovisual Universe of the Latin American Child and The Reality of Latinos in the United States.

This year’s festival will pay tribute to the San Antonio de los Banos International Film School in its 20th anniversary and includes a showing of films from the school’s graduates.

Guevara also noted that the festival opens three days following the 50th anniversary of the 1956 landing of the Granma yacht to eastern Cuba, bringing the rebels who would eventually topple the Batista dictatorship just over two years later.

I hope by this time next year the travel ban is lifted!  I’d sure love to be in Havana for the film festival.

Can anyone tell me any details on the film festival, such as costs, venues, and what’s on the schedule for the last few days? The official site is very nice, but my Spanish isn’t good enough to read it.
Thanks!
