Well-known intellectuals from Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe began the task this week of reviewing more than 400 literary works presented in the 47th edition of the prestigious Casa de las Americas Award. The jury was officially installed on Monday at the Casa building in Havana.

Argentine writer David Vinas, winner of the Casa de las Americas award for best novel in 1967 with “Los Hombres de a Caballo,” was on hand for the occasion and spoke of the need to “dismantle imperialist intervention” most evident in Latin America by the large media monopolies.

The novelist recalled his initial contacts in Cuba during the 1960s when he met guerrilla commander turned minister of government, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, and Cuban author Lezama Lima.

The occasion marking the opening of the contest was attended by Ricardo Alarcon, President of the Cuban Parliament; Abel Prieto, Minister of Culture; Roberto Fernandez Retamar, President of Casa de las Americas; and several prominent figures of Cuban literature and art, and Latin American diplomats.
