A celebration of Hip-Hop took place in Havana, Cuba this past weekend. Rap enthusiasts there held the 11th annual Hip-Hop Fest. from November 24- November 26.

The international affair, which has attracted such artists as Common, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, and Dead Prez, included film screenings, workshops, and discussions about the country’s subculture. The events took place in the East Havana suburb of Alamar, arguably the birthplace of Cuban Hip-Hop, and featured popular Cuban artists, Doble Filo, Obsesion, Hermanazos, and Anonimo Consejo.

Hip-Hop first came to Cuba in the 1980’s through Miami TV and radio broadcasts. Initially, the popularity of the culture was founded on break dancing, until the 90’s, when Cuban raperos began fusing Cuban music with Hip-Hop, creating their unique subculture.
