The western Cuban province of Matanzas will be the venue of the Baseball Hall of Fame in the Caribbean Island.

The museum will be housed at the Palmar de Junco Stadium, where the first official baseball game in the country was held in December 1874.

On that occasion, a game took place between the Havana Baseball Club and the Matanzas Baseball Club. The game was reported by the newspapers “La Aurora del Yumurí”, of Matanzas, and “El Artista”, of Havana.

The museum will exhibit photos and documents about the career of major Cuban baseball players, including the legendary Martín Dihigo, also known as “El Inmortal” (The Immortal).

The Hall of Fame will also includes the famous pitchers Jose Antonio Huelga and Santiago “Changa” Mederos, as well as umpires, sports commentators, journalists, historians and other prominent figures.

For that purpose, restoration works are underway at the Palmar de Junco Stadium, as part of Cuban authorities’ project to renovate sports facilities throughout the country.
