US surgeons visit Cuba to perform pediatric surgery

Cuban and US physicians met in central Cienfuegos province to exchange experiences on pediatric surgery.

The initiative was part of a program implemented by the non-governmental organization (NGO) Plasticos Foundation, created six years ago.

Within the framework of the project, a dozen US surgeons worked with their Cuban colleagues and performed reconstructive surgery on hands, burns and harelips.

According to experts, more than 60 children benefited from plastic surgery as part of the project, which also consisted of lectures by the US doctors at the University of Medical Sciences in Cienfuegos.

For the visiting physicians, their stay in Cuba gave them the chance to learn about surgical procedures that could be used in other regions of the world.

At the same time, doctors at the Paquito González Children’s Hospital learned new medical techniques in plastic surgery.

If only this spirit of solidarity could be broadened. I am surprised that George Bush did not squash this project…I guess he did not hear about it.
