MIAMI—The United States has given members of the anti-Castro Cuban American National Foundation permission to travel to Cuba for a meeting of dissidents May 20.

Foundation Director Alfredo Mesa said he has the word from the Treasury Department, but travel plans are a secret so far, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Friday.

The meeting is called the Assembly to Promote Civil Society and will take place in Havana.

The Assembly is an umbrella organization of 365 dissident organizations with a goal of establishing democracy in Cuba.

The trip by foundation members is expected to require permission from Cuba in addition to the United States.

Some who plan to attend intend to travel through third countries like Mexico or the Bahamas without getting the approval of the Fidel Castro regime.

The assembly’s organizers in Cuba said the Cuban government is pressuring members to resign or to undermine the meeting.
