Cuba may be one the first countries in the American continent to eradicate the scourge of tuberculosis as a public health problem in the medium term.

Cuban health authorities pointed out that the goal would be achieved when a rate of five patients per every 100,000 inhabitants is reported.

As an example, experts recalled that Cuba’s rate was 6.6 cases of tuberculosis per every 100,000 inhabitants in 2004.

The nations with the lowest prevalence of tuberculosis in the continent are Chile, Uruguay and Cuba. More than 100 municipalities in the Caribbean Island have reported a rate lower than five.

In addition, Cuba has taken major actions to prevent tuberculosis, including vaccination of all newborns, thus guaranteeing that they will no suffer from a serious form of the disease.

The official strategy also includes the monitoring, control, treatment and monthly follow-up of patients until they are cured.
