Humberto Solás, one of Cuba’s best moviemakers, received the 2005 National Cinema Award.

According to the jury, the decision is an acknowledgement of Solás’ work, which includes major feature-length films like “Manuela” and “Lucía”, and of his contributions to Cuban cinema over the past four decades.

The jury, made up of filmmakers, critics and intellectuals, described Solás’ career as outstanding. He is the third Cuban moviemaker to receive such a distinction, after Alfredo Guevara and Julio García Espinosa.

Solás’ films also include “Un Día de Noviembre” (1972), “Simparele” (1974), “Cantata de Chile” (1975), “Amada” (1983), “Un Hombre de Exito” (1986), “El Siglo de las Luces” (1991) and “Miel para Ochún” (2001).
He is currently working on a feature-length film entitled “Gente de Pueblo”, starring Jorge Perugorría and Isabel Santos.
