Canada’s Olympic baseball team defeated Cuba 9-1 Sunday in a pre-Olympic tournament in Italy.

Pitcher Mike Johnson of Edmonton allowed just three hits over six innings and Calgary’s Ryan Radmanovich drove in two runs to improve Canada’s record to 2-0 at the tournament.

“I had a good night at the plate but our offence really did well as a whole,” said Radmanovich. “A win over a top team like Cuba is great for our confidence as we continue to prepare for the Olympics.”

“It’s an honour to wear our national team jersey and it’s always great to have a good outing,” said Johnson.

“I felt good about my performance tonight but our defence made a lot of good plays behind me.”

Pierre-Luc Laforest of Hull, Que., and Simon Pond of North Vancouver, B.C., each drove in runs to give Canada a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. Three Canadian batters had two RBIs each, including Adam Stern of London, Ont., and Jeremy Ware of Orangeville, Ont.

Canada plays Italy Monday with left-hander Paul Spoljaric of Kelowna, B.C., scheduled to start. Canada finishes out the tournament Aug. 10 against Chinese Taipei.
