Havana.- The city of Cárdenas, in western Matanzas province, hosted the 2nd Steam Locomotive Festival.

According to experts, the event is part of a strategy to boost tourism linked to the sugar industry in the largest Antillean Island.

The program for visitors included a tour of a sugar factory founded over 100 years ago, where they were briefed on the industrial process to produce sugar.

It also included a visit to a sugarcane field and cane-cutting demonstrations, as well as a trip to the city of Cárdenas, where there are many Spanish-colonial buildings.

As part of the festival, a contest of steam locomotives built between 1916 and 1925 and which are in an excellent state of preservation was held.
Cuba’s sugar industry has some 300 steam locomotives, many of which are over 100-years-old and are considered true historic relics.
