La Jolla Music Society is pleased to present the Ballet Nacional de Cuba’s San Diego debut in two performances on Wed., Nov. 12, and Thurs., Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. in the Civic Theatre, downtown San Diego.  Alicia Alonso, the company’s artistic director and one of the most famous ballet personalities of our time, will be in residence.

The performance on Nov. 12 features the full length story ballet, “Don Quixote,” loosely based on the Cervantes novel of the same name, choreographed by Alicia Alonso, Marta Garcia and Maria Elena Llorente after Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorski, with the music of composer Ludwig Minkus provided by the San Diego Symphony.  The company’s presentation of “Don Quixote” in San Diego will be the only performance on the current U.S. tour with live music.

The performance on Nov. 13 is a mixed repertory program featuring the classic “Swan Lake, Act II,” and the pas de deux from Act III of Swan Lake, “The Black Swan,” with choreography by Alicia Alonso and music by Tchaikovski; “Canto Vital”(Song of Nature), choreographed by Azari Plisetski to music by Gustav Mahler; and one of the company’s signature pieces, “Blood Wedding,” with libretto by Alfredo Manas based on the play by Federico Garcia Lorca, with choreography by Antonio Gades and music by Emilio de Diego.

The Ballet Nacional de Cuba is recognized world-wide for its artistic and technical excellence.  The company regularly tours Europe, Asia and South America and has received an award from the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris.  Each year, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba hosts an international ballet competition and for the past 42 years has invited dance companies from around the world to its international ballet festival in Havana.
