SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge yesterday refused to toss Havana’s bid to host the 2012 Games - pitting the tropical capital against the Big Apple and seven other cities. Rogge said he was confident the Cuban capital’s proposal would be as strong as any of the other cities.

“The nine cities have big possibilities,” Rogge said after watching the opening ceremony for the Pan American Games.

The other cities in the running are: London, Moscow, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul, Leipzig and Paris.

Rogge said that the staging of the Pan American Games would leave an important legacy for the Dominican Republic, which has struggled to get venues ready in time and where the cost involved has angered many people.

“The Games will be a great legacy for the Dominican Republic,” he said. “They will put the Dominican Republic on the map.”
