Havana.- Cuba’s western province of Havana has reported a substantial reduction in the infant mortality rate during the first few months of 2003.
Local health authorities pointed out that during the said period, the infant mortality rate dropped to 5.6 deaths per every 1,000 live births.

Last year, that indicator of Cuba’s Mother-Child Program was 8.4 deaths per every 1,000 live births, according to experts.

This achievement resulted from a critical analysis early this year, better working methods and improved medical services.

Training, which is planned in accordance with each municipality’s needs, and is aimed at solving major deficiencies and improving the follow-up of pregnant women, especially those affected by risks factors, contributed to this drop in the infant mortality rate.
