Havana.- The Cuban capital hosted a guitar festival entitled “Aires Americanos” (American Airs), which was dedicated to Latin American award-winning composers.

The event’s program included works by such musicians as Manuel M. Ponce, from Mexico, and Agustín Barrios (Mangore), from Paraguay, as well as a tribute to the Cuban composer Carlos Fariñas, who passed away recently.

The music performed at the festival included “Choro de Saudade” by Mangore, “Tema popular mexicano” by Ponce, “Seis por derecho” by Antonio Laura, from Venezuela, and “Concierto para laud y orquesta” by Fariñas.

Young award-wining guitarists such as Alí Jorge Arango, Alexis Mendez, Rosa Matos and Ariel Atorresagasti performed that music at Havana’s Amadeo Roldán Theater.

As part of the 2003 “Aires Americanos” Festival, the Noel Nicola National Guitar Contest, which serves as a platform for the biennial international event, was held.
