My First Days in Cuba

Posted May 16, 2003 by I-zenzopn in Cuba Culture.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My name is Zenzo and I am a computer lecturer in Computers at a South African University.I am a Zimbabwean and I am here on contract up to 2003.I did my first degree in Cuba from 1991 to 1996 in La Isla De La Juventud(Filial Pedagogica Universitaria.I then went on two do my masters degree in Computer Science at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe.I have taught in Zimbabwe for about 6 six years .En Zimbabwe ahora estamos en periodo especial y es muy dificil vivir en el pais and es por eso que estoy aqui en South Africa.Pero eso,no quiere decir que no soy patriotico.I love my country very much, but I am now working here and if normalise,I will definitely go back.
I would realy love to communicate with people who speak Spanish and/or English even those who can mix English and Spanish like Yo me voy to town.

I remember my first days in Cuba in La Demajagua,in La Isla De De La Juventud .My first days were a bit difficult because of the language barrier and this made me put a lot of effort in learning the Spanish.
By then it was very easy becasue I used to drink beer then unlike now where I am now a christian.
I was shocked when we went to the beach for the first time to see Cuban people out there. It was a cultural shock for me and some of my friends because it was our first time to go to the beach and also nudity in African culture is a taboo.Remember ,Zimbabwe is a landlocked country.
We were a bit out of place because we were putting on suits which and jerseys and some of the Cubans were laughing at us because of the heat. But to us ,it was normally because we put on ties and suits most of the time and it took me quite some time to start dressing like the Cubans in T-shirts and jeans.I did not want to be like a guajiro!
I found the Cuban people very sociable.
La otra cosa que me interesa mucho de la vida Cubana are the racial relations.I admire the way the Cuban people relate along racial lines .Everbody is equal in Cuba.
I cherish my days in Cuba especially when I could not speak Spanish properly, but gracias a la mujeres Cubana ,I was able to speak it within a short time.During my holidays ,I used to go to La Habana or La Cuidad Habana.
Para mi ,la gente Cubana son la mejor del mundo.

I went to the United States recently and it was a pleasure to meet the Cuban community in Miami ,Florida and I really enjoyed my stay there.Imagine there is even a small Havana where you can have anything Cuban and it was such a pleasure.I also met a few Cubans In Toronto,Ontario,Canada in June and unfortunately the situation is not the same as in Miami where they dominate a lot.
During my stay in Florida,my room was cleaned on different days by people from South America hablando el espanyol. In Canada I even met a Colombian guy who is writing to me on a regular bais.
A mexican friend has also been sending me videos de Mexican musicians and it is so nice to meet many people as you travel all over the world.I have been travelling a lot because of my doctoral studies and it is only in Germany(Bohn ,Frankfurt and Cologne ) where I did not meet any Cubans
