HAVANA, March 13 (Anna Rosa Veitía, UPECI / http://www.cubanet.org) - Since the end of last week, Havana has been subject to electric power cutbacks of over ten hours every day due to maintenance and repair work in three power generating plants around the island.

Typically power is cut between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m., and again from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The Carlos Manuel de Cespedes generating station, in central Cuba, is down for maintenance; two smaller stations in Havana province are out of service awaiting repairs.

Everyday conveniences, such as water and refrigeration, cannot be depended upon under the circumstances. For example, last week, squid became available in the city’s markets for the first time in six months. Several establishments have reported considerable loses due to spoilage, and many consumers have elected not to pick up their assigned quotas, in expectation of better times. In many areas, the air reeks of spoiled squid.
