THE SPLENDOR OF CUBA - 450 Years of Architecture and Interiors is a new, high-quality coffee table photo and history book about Cuban architecture.

Written by Michael Connors, photographed by Brent Winebrenner and designed by Massimo Vignelli, this 320 page hardcover book is 11” x 11” and features almost 300 all original photographs of Cuban architecture from colonial palaces to mid century modern homes.

Michael Connors, a Caribbean architecture and antiques expert, has over thirty years of experience in writing, consultation, and teaching in fine and decorative arts. He received his Ph.D. in Decorative Arts from New York University where he taught for fifteen years. He is a contributor to numerous publications such as Art & Antiques, Antiques and Fine Art, and The Magazine Antiques.

Published by Rizzoli New York and just released, Splendor of Cuba is now available for $85.

From the press release… If you feel you have seen exhibitions and books of formerly beautiful, gently deteriorating Cuban architecture, Michael Connors’ book will be a quiet revelation.

Exceptional preservation work has kept these villas in their magnificent original state, and the photographs, shot exclusively for this book, show examples in each area of the island—from the interiors and exteriors in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, Santa Clara, Cienfuegos, and Pinar del Río to close-up details of courtyards, balconies, galleries, balustrades, grilles, and louvered doors in Trinidad, Matanzas, and Holguín. Also included is Finca Vigía (“Lookout Farm”), the former residence of Ernest Hemingway.

For anyone with an interest in Cuba, this book will be a true discovery, and a volume to be treasured.

What a wonderful book! Not only it is unbelievably well illustrated with magnificient photos of the Cuba that nobody knows, it has very good historical information also. My only question is: does it exist in Spanish? Angelica from Miami

I have seen the “proof copy” of the book and can attest to the fact that it is unbelievably good. I “reflects,” “documents,” and “reinforces” what we knew we had in Cuba before the revolution.  It is a must, not only for Cuban fans, but for anyone who is interested in “Island Living” in the Caribbean.

I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of this gorgeous book.  What a treat it is to get a peek into those fabulous homes. From what I can see online, it looks exquisite and whets my appetite for a trip to Cuba.

Author, Michael Connors has opened the velvet curtain on the hidden splendor and richness of Cuba…This magnificent book should restore the lost years to the Cuban community and to international historians.

This is no less than an extraordinary publication. The photography is superb: the erudite and finely-researched copy perfectly captures and conveys the spirit of Cuba. The country’s history, in step with its cultural expressions of art, architecture and interior design, are unveiled to the reader with a clearer and fiercer understanding than ever before expressed. Quite simply, a don’t-miss for design enthusiasts.

Michael Connors never disappoints, and The Splendor of Cuba will follow his legacy of giving readers beautiful and educational voyages into Caribbean history, culture, and architecture. A must have, that will soon be a part of my design library.

I was able to view an advance copy of ‘The Splendor of Cuba’; the photos are beautiful, and Dr. Connors’ writing is equally lovely and inspiring.
