Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), located off western Havana province’s southern coast, will host the 5th Festival of Sucu Suco, a local musical genre, in December.

The event, to be held in the city of Nueva Gerona, is part of cultural authorities’ efforts to preserve the region’s dances and musical traditions.

According to experts, sucu suco – which has a Mediterranean origin – is characterized by two-four times.

During the festival, the organizing committee will grant awards to the best three songs submitted to the jury, which will be made up of renowned experts in traditional music, especially from Isla de la Juventud.

In addition, the music performed at the Festival of Sucu Suco will be part of the local cultural heritage.
