HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Sela Ward has strapped on her dancing shoes to join the cast of Artisan Entertainment and Miramax Films’ long-in-the-works “Dirty Dancing” sequel “Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing 2.” Set in 1958 Cuba, the story centers on an American girl who moves with her family to the revolution-era capital and falls hard for a local dancer.
The film will star newcomer Romola Garai (“Nicholas Nickleby”) in the lead role while Mexican actor Diego Luna (“Y tu mama tambien”) will play her love interest.
Ward, who starred in the ABC TV drama “Once and Again” and next stars in “Day After Tomorrow” for Fox, will play a ballroom dancer and the mother of Garai’s character.
Directed by Guy Ferland, the film was inspired by 1987 hit “Dirty Dancing,” which generated more than $250 million in worldwide theatrical revenue and remains the top-selling entry in Artisan’s 6,700-title library.
Plans to do a sequel first surfaced in 1996 and have gone through several incarnations, including a location shift to Miami’s South Beach, before settling on the final Latin-flavored formula.
“Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing 2” begins shooting this Tuesday in Puerto Rico. Artisan plans to release it domestically on Feb. 13, on Valentine’s Day weekend.
