Scorpion toxin is becoming increasingly popular in the treatment of cancer and other serious illnesses in Cuba. So far it has been used on nearly 5,000 Cuban patients and 3,000 foreigners.

At the opening ceremony of a new scorpion farm in Las Tunas province, some 670 kilometers east of Havana, the Head of the Bio-Pharmaceutical Laboratories (LABIOFAM) Jose Antonio Fraga said that at present there are scorpion farms in every Cuban province.

Dr Fraga said that they have the technology to have them reproduce in captivity to obtain the toxin, and that once their toxin based product is patented they will increase production so as to meet domestic and foreign demands.

Scorpion venom is a natural anti-inflammatory and a painkiller harmless to humans. It is a strong anti-carcinogenic effective in the treatment of tumors and ailments of the central nervous system, the lungs, neck, womb, prostate and pancreas.
