The health system in eastern Holguín province has benefited from state-of-the-art technology to improve the quality of medical care.

Holguín’s Medical Genetics Center is equipped with a chromosome classifier, which makes detailed tests to detect a wide range of congenital problems.

According to experts, the equipment detects chromosomal diseases, of which 150 cases, most of which were incompatible to life, were detected in Holguín last year.

The equipment can also detect chromosomal disorders such as Down’s and Tourner’s syndromes, in which cases experts can advise women about what to do at an early state of pregnancy.

In addition, conditions are being created to exchange images and information through a computer network of the national health system, which allows physicians to consult other doctors about difficult cases.

The center recently began implementing two new programs to test children for metabolic diseases.
