A staircase collapsed at the Union Hispanoamericana Masonic lodge in the Havana district of Luyano, and left four lodges that used to meet in the building homeless.

The building, built in 1916, needs urgent repairs which the Masons say
they don’t have the resources for. In the immediate vicinity, 90% of
the buildings are in fair or poor condition, according to official figures.

Four lodges used the two-story building for meetings. “If we were to
add the treasuries of the four, it would still not be enough to repair
the building,” said a Masonic official. “The Great Lodge of Cuba offered
to help with 300 pesos, or about 11 dollars, which would not be enough
to buy two sacks of cement.”

The four lodges are currently looking for alternate places to hold their meetings.
