Guitarists from nine countries will compete in the 12th International Guitar Competition and Festival in Havana scheduled for May 8 through 15.

Organizers of the contest said Monday that 29 guitarists have signed up for the compitition. They include eight musicians from Cuba and others from Japan, Germany, Ecuador, Israel, Ukraine, Italy, Brazil and Greece.

A panel of judges headed by Cuban composer, performer and conductor Leo Brouwer, director of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, will rate the participants’ performances in three rounds of competition and announce the winners on May 14.

An exhibit on Brouwer’s artistic career will also highlight the event and will include a display of books and scores as well as photos and personal belongings related to his work.

Cuban virtuosos Joaquin Clerch and Marcos Dias Tamayo, three-string guitar player Pancho Amat and classical ensemble ArsLonga are scheduled to perform.

Foreign artists invited to the event include Egberto Gismonti of Brazil, Victor Pellegrini of Argentina, Costas Cotsiolis of Greece and Spanish maestro Anton Garca Abril, whose 75th birthday the festival will help celebrate.

We are trying to find out how to purchase handmade Guitars in Cuba. We just got back from a visit to Santa Clara. We met with a guitar / drummer trio, and they had mentioned that that there was a handmade guitar manufaturer in Santa Clara, however were unable to get in contact with them during our visit.
We are planning on returning during December’2005 this year so hopefully we can get some better information beforehand so that we can meet and purchase a handmade guitar at that time.

If you have any ideas, please let us know.
    thanks….
