Music has been a part of Cuban culture for many years and most would agree that jazz has its roots in Havana. Therefore, Havana is the perfect city for an international jazz festival.
The Story of the Havana International Jazz Festival
The event was born in 1978 when Bobby Carcasses, and other Cuban Jazz musicians, presented the first Jazz concert at the Casa de la Cultura in Havana city. It was such a success that the second festival was planned featuring world famous pianist Chucho Valdes. Many years later he became Director and President of the Organizing Committee.
The 28th Havana International Jazz Festival is sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM) and runs from December 20 to 23, 2012.
The main venue for the Festival will be the Karl Marx theater which holds 8,000 people… the largest seating capacity in all of Cuba. Other venues include the Casa del Alba, Amadeo Roldan theater, Mella Theatre, Casa de la Cultura of Plaza, La Zorra y El Cuervo Jazz Club, Palacio de La Rumba, National Theater of Cuba, the Sevilla and Cohiba hotels.
Past performers include international jazz masters such as Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Carmen McCrae, Charlie Haden, Michel Lengrand, Ronnie Scott, Hugh Fraser, Kash Killion, Daniel Martina, Luis Monge and great Jazz bands such as Cubanola, the Ronnie Mathews Trio, the Kenny Barron Trio, Dave Valentin and many more.
Late night jams are a nightly occurrence and have provided interesting match-ups such as Roy Hargrove sitting in with percussion legend Changuito.
