Villa Clara budding star Dayan Viciedo is entering the history of Cuban baseball on Sunday by becoming the youngest player to ever line up in an All-Star Game featuring the Eastern and Western best players during the season┤s first half.

Viciedo, 16, could be the right outfielder for the Easterners, together with Olympic champ Osmany Urrutia, leading hitter in the current 45th National Baseball Series, and promising Yoennis Cespedes, who is among the first in homeruns.

Born in Remedios city in Villa Clara on March 10, 1989, Viciedo played shortstop and third base, and pitched for Cuban national teams in international youth competitions.

During the World 15-16 Baseball Cup at the Mexican City of Monterrey, Viciedo was selected for the All-Star Team and the Most Valuable Player.

With number 10 on his back, he resembles Pinar del Rio retired third baseman Omar Linares, whose performances in and out of the country were remarkable.

Viciedo┤s .350 batting average during the first half of the season (45 games) made him eligible for the All-Star Game.

In 45 games, he drove in 27 runs and homered six times to be one of the best batters for his team, together with first baseman Ariel Borrero and catcher Ariel Pestano, who will also see action in the Sunday game at Havana Latin American Stadium.

The event program includes a ceremony to award the Best Cuban Athletes of 2005, the Home Run Derby and a catchers┤ throwing contest.

Historic results of these games show a 10-10 tie between Easterners and Westerners, so today┤s game will tilt the balance to one or other selection.

The Julio Antonio Mella Stadium of the eastern province of Las Tunas hosted the 2004 All-Star Game, in which the Westerners won to halt a two-game winning streak by Villa Clara reliever Yolexis Ulacia, who was not included this time.
