New Song Movement (Nueva Trova) composer Noel Nicola passed away Sunday at 58 and will be buried at Havana’s Colon Cemetery on Monday.

Nicola was born October 7, 1946 and composed his first songs at the age of 13. His first concert in public took place at the Casas de Las Americas in 1968 along Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes.

The musician was a founder and the first president of the Cuban New Song Movement and composed music for children, for theatre, movies, television, as well as other songs in which he introduced poems as the lyrics.

Noel Nicola represented Cuba on many international tours travelling to 30 countries in Europe, Africa and the Americas. He was granted several awards and distinctions including the Felix Varela Order issued by the Cuban Council of State.

In just two days Cuba has lost two important musicians, Noel Nicola and singer Ibrahim Ferrer, one of the members of the Buena Vista Social Club, who passed away Saturday at the age of 78. Ferrer will also be laid to rest Monday at the Colon Cemetery in Havana.
