Some 70 museums have opened their doors throughout the Caribbean Island since 1996 to date, as part of authorities’ strategy to recuperate those facilities.

Officials from the National Restoration and Museology Center highlighted Cuba’s cultural policy, which has contributed to preserving a patrimony of high social impact.

Among the museums that have been reopened over the past few years are the Oscar María de Rojas Museum, in Cárdenas, and the Bacardi Museum, just to mention some.

In addition, the municipal museums in Viñales and Bahía Honda, in western Pinar del Río province, and Ruben Martínez Villena’s birth house, in Havana, are being remodeled.

Authorities’ main challenge is to attract young people to the museums, so they have created more attractive options to involve that segment of the population in the cultural activity of museums.

The experts said that museums must be at the service of the community and must reflect the situation and history of the territory where they are located.
