Cuba picked two boxing gold medals Saturday night and will try for five more Sunday.

Heavyweight Odlanier Solis Fonte and flyweight Yuriorkis Gamboa Toledano gave Cuba victories on the first day of boxing finals, but countryman Yudel Johnson Cedeno lost in the light-welterweight division.

Fonte, coached by legendary Cuban heavyweight and three-time gold medalist Felix Savon, defeated Viktar Zuyev of Belarus, 22-13.

Fonte was behind briefly at 8-7 in the second round, but a 6-1 run to end the round put him in control.

In the first bout of the evening, Toledano defeated France’s Jerome Thomas, 38-23. Cedeno fell to Thailand’s Manus Boonjumnong, 17-11.

Cuba will have a boxer in five of the six bouts on Sunday’s schedule.

The other two weight classes contested Saturday were won by Russians—welaterweight Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov over Gennadiy Golovkin of Kazakhstan, 28-18; and featherweight Alexei Tichtchenko over Kim Song Guk of North Korea, 39-17.
