HAVANA, Cuba—Idania Bello Acosta’s bruised face was wrapped with gauze and her swollen, stitched eyes were concealed behind dark sunglasses as she waited for a checkup at one of Havana’s largest and busiest hospitals.
While most patients around her had little choice but to succumb to the scalpel to remove cysts or tumors, Bello Acosta was just making another brief detour on the road to beautiful.
The 47-year-old store manager had a tummy tuck four years ago. Then she had a breast lift. Now a surgeon had smoothed out the wrinkles around her eyelids and chin just four days ago.
“As long as I see something out of place, I’ll take it away,” Bello Acosta said. “My friends say, `You’re crazy; why are you doing this?’ I’m not worried about the operation, I’m worried about the mirror.”
The combined procedures would have cost Bello Acosta about $11,000 in a U.S. hospital or clinic. In Cuba, where medical treatments are free, they didn’t cost a peso, although she did have to appeal to friends with connections at the hospital to help speed along the wait for an operating room.
In the United States the demand for cosmetic procedures has stagnated in recent years, reflecting a tighter economy, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In Cuba, however, vanity medicine is on the rise as more women, and even some men, try to ward off the effects of aging.
After Cuba’s 1959 revolution, when hundreds of doctors fled, cosmetic surgery was seen by some as a bourgeois holdover. Then the specialty focused on reconstructive surgery for scarred burn victims or patients with disfiguring birth defects.
Times have changed and several plastic surgeons said cosmetic procedures have become increasingly popular in the past decade, even in provincial cities outside Havana.
There is one notable cultural difference between American and Cuban patients: While more than twice as many American women seek breast augmentation over reduction, in Cuba less is more when it comes to cup size, making reductions more popular.
Dr. Elvira Martinez Barreto is one of several plastic surgeons in the city of Cienfuegos, on Cuba’s southern coast.
“The demand is high,” she said, adding that she treats patients from nearby provinces that don’t have the Mexican liposuction equipment her hospital bought several years ago.
Martinez Barreto, 47, is not only a surgeon; she is also a patient.
“I’ve had everything done, the tummy, the thighs, the breast lift and the face,” she said. “They (the surgeons) give me a sedative so I don’t try to give instructions during the operation.”
Raquel Padron, 40, a petite brunette who always longed to get rid of her tummy paunch, was one of her patients.
She had liposuction two years ago. Her older sister followed suit a day after Padron’s surgery and her 20-year-old niece went in for it about a year after that.
“This is the best thing that can happen to a woman for her ego,” said Padron, who now lives in Montreal. “I can wear tight dresses and low-cut jeans. I am completely satisfied and the scars are minimal.”
In recent years cosmetic surgery has become one of the most sought after procedures in Havana hospitals serving dollar-paying foreigners.
At the Cira Garcia clinic, which is better stocked and equipped than most hospitals serving Cuban patients, many procedures cost about half of what they do in the United States. Despite a ban on American travelers to Cuba, U.S. patients—many of them Cuban Americans—rank third after Bahamians and Venezuelans seeking cosmetic surgery, said Dr. Jesus Burgue, one of the clinic’s surgeons.
I am researching different places to have a tummy tuck and some liposuction done safely and in-expensively. The prices in the U.S is way too high for a single mom of two. They are more geared towards mini-millionares. So far I’ve checked into Venezuela,Costa-Rica,Dominican Republic and Jamaica. I have always heard that the Cuban Doctors are ranked among the best in the world for other things, I am hoping they have not all fled to the states and that they are also excellent in the field of plastic surgery. Yes, I recently had breast reduction surgery in Cuba at the Cira Garcia Clinic in Havana. Dr.Jesus`Burgue` and Dr. Lao performed the surgery, I had no pain and the stitches weren’t tight, he is excellent. The nursing staff is great and they really care for the patients, you may get tired of the food but that’ with every hospital. The private rooms are very nice and spacious, someone cleans your room and makes your bed everyday just like a hotel. They have two beds in the rooms to accomodate any body else who travels with you. The cost of my surgery was not that expensive, altogether everything including the cost of all the materials they used on me, phone calls to the Bahamas, accomodations for my sister who stayed with me for 7 days and my prescriptions came up to about $4000 There were lots of Bahamians there on my floor when I was there and that was a little over a month ago. Now alot of you want different types of surgery the length of time you will have to stay can be estimated but it depends on how fast your body heals and adjust to the surgery you had. If you have to stay over the length of time on your ticket, they have a directors office at the clinic who will rearrange your flight schedule for. Med-Plan does alot of the arrangements for you, but I advise anyone not to go through them because they do not give you full details of the things you need to know. I just got all the information from Cuba about plastic surgery, and especially since the wait is long in Havana most of the patients are going to the provice of cienfuegos where they recently converted a beach resort into a hospital for tourists. All the procedures are done there, basic lyposuction is about $1300 and for a tummy tuck will run you about $1900. Remember if you bring US $$ you will pay additional 20% due to the currency exchange.

For all those of you looking for plastic surgery and answers, I will give you some ideas on how I’ve been looking for my own answers and maybe this will help you find safety and quality.
First, I have checked board-certifications out, and the requirements seem to vary a great deal! What I have decided to do, is choose a surgeon from a listing of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon. their website is http://www.isaps.org What impressed me about their non-profit organisation, is that Surgeons are chosen by INVITATION only. They must be approved by every ISAPS member in their country before they may be accepted. You can check their website to see what other criteria they have.
I looked up the surgeries and their descriptions from tons of Doctor’s websites, and other sites like beautysurg.com and a bunch of the other websites advertising medical tourism when you google search. I found the absolute BEST info since I’ve been looking about preparing your body (internal health-wise) from a website in Brazil called plasticsurgery-guide.com. It was under her Pre and Post-op section. Another good one is cirurgiaplastica.jwf.com.
It seems at least in my case, that it’s hard to find a plastic surgeon’s office that responds to e-mails, but some of them do, so it’s worth a try. out of about 7 e-mails, I got a response for 3.
Another thing I did was look for news stoies on the net, and from what I found, most of them were favorable toward brazil and Argentina.
I’m interested in saving money, so I looked into Costa Rica. I had a doctor picked out, until I googled his name plus words like “plastic surgery disaster” or “horror” or “ stories” and things that would bring up news stories or examples of people who wrote blogs like these. That was a real eye-opener, and I’m not going there.
I contacted a medical tourism place, but they were going to send me to Malaysia. I couldn’t find the doctor’s credentials or certification in Malaysia at all. Also, I didn’t feel comfortable about going there even though the prices are amaing.
I checked with a very popular tourism place in Argentina, and they were helpful and pleasant, but they quoted me $4000 more than an ISAPS doctor did for the same 2 procedures. Their price included accomodations at a 3* hotel but that only brings it down by $1000 to $1200, so… really not that great.
I was happy to find that some doctor’s offices (the 2 I contacted were also ISAPS doctors) actually include picking you up from the airport! that’s one of the things that draws people (or at least me) to want a full service company, but by and large, you REALLY have no way of knowing how good the quality will be. (the Argentinian company I looked up, had MANY complaints. I didn’t look at other companies, so I’m not sure about those. google is great for blogs and info. You can’t always trust a doctor’s own website because who knows who really wrote those....think about it.
Beware of before and after photos! There were many central american doctors posting those links on their websites, but I discovered that they were not examples of their own work, but actually picture from associations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and places like that.
When you’ve narrowed it down, check to see if the doc has hospital affiliation. This is just another way to determine how respected and skilled they are, and if you should need to go to the hospital, the doctor can be one of those that help you.
SAFETY is very important! I even looked up the canadian government website to see if there were warnings for travel to other countries. In canada it’s http://www.voyage.gov.ca there are warnings accented at different levels. In the USA I think it’s osac.gov.
On the subject of safety, I discovered that the rate of deaths for liposuction are 1 in every 5000 (try googling this) and other plastic surgeries are 1 in 57,000.
