Cinequest Distributes Award-Winning Film Following Cuban Artists and Athletes

SAN JOSE, CA – April 30, 2008 – Cinequest is proud to provide film fans access to a groundbreaking documentary, which won Cinequest Film Festival’s Global Landscapes Directing Award for its ability to reach into the lives of four young Cubans—a boxer and ballerina from Havana, Cuba; and a boxer and ballerina from Miami, Florida—and reveal the unique struggles underwent with their chosen passions.

Directors Mike Cahill and Brit Marling’s intimate filmmaking approach unearths the passion of four Cuban athletes and dancers constrained by the suppressive politics of their homeland. A beautiful picture that juxtaposes dreams pursued in two different worlds, Boxers+Ballerinas demonstrates that patriotism is not confined to geographic boundaries.  With Fidel Castro stepping down, a wave of change and promise makes Boxers+Ballerinas a poignant and timely film that delivers an emotional piece, which challenges audience to ask, “Does where you live determine who you are?”

Cinequest Distribution is a multifaceted, fluid system of distribution not previously available to filmmakers and film fans. Cinequest’s focus is to make indie and international films successful, and the institute is able to present financial scenarios to filmmakers that are much more appealing than traditional distribution deals. With the unique business model of partnering with other companies such as Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), Cinequest is capable of tailor-making a distribution package for each film thereby maximizing profitability. Currently DVD wholesale relationships are expanding to include mass-market retail centers via the sales forces of Blockbuster, Jaman.com, Movie Gallery/Hollywood, Baker & Taylor, Ingram Entertainment, TNT Media, VPD, and others.  Boxers+Ballerinas is set to street on June 17, 2008; pre-order by May 21, 2008.
