A million hectares are protected in Cuba with biological products of national production, with 75 percent of reductions of pesticide consumption and a saving of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Dr Orieta Fernandez-Larrea reported biological control is part of a national program in which 175 centers of entomopathogenous and entomophagus microrganism reproduction, four fermentation plants and one biofactory participate.

She stated the needs in that vegetable health respond to the sowing plans, and highlighted the importance of the technologic discipline.

She pointed out the importance of lixophaga flies to avoid the attack of the cane borer, an insect that that bores into the woody parts of the plant.

The specialist also underlined the employment of biological agents in cabbage, yucca and sweet potato cultivation.

She also reminded that Cuba is the first country in the world that eradicated methyl bromide in tobacco.

Orieta pointed out the resistance of some plagues to chemical products on a world scale and the possible of resolving that difficulty in contemporary agriculture.

In Cuba, she said, bio-pesticide production is enough to care for all available cultivation.

Virus and bacteria cause millions in losses in agriculture annually.
