DT Cuba offers a lot of information about Cuban business, culture and travel and regularly reports on Cuban business news. I suggest subscribing to their newsletter as seen on the left side of the page here.

Here is a summary of a few business articles from Cuba. However, since Cuba has no independent press and is known for using sub-standard accounting practices, you should not believe everything you read from ANY Cuban government news source.

Desalination Plants for the Cuban Economy

Cuba will include, this year, the services of three new desalination plants supplied by the Italian company Chematek S.p.A.

Works are concentrated on the installation of the facilities at the thermoelectric plants of Havana, Nuevitas and Enervas in Boca de Jaruco.

According to specialists, the plants turn seawater; as well as the water from rivers and reservoirs into an ultra-pure water to feed high pressure boilers.

The equipment functioning is based on reverse osmosis with a refining process by means of ionic exchange resins that, among other advantages, are capable of holding viruses and bacteria.

The company Cubahidráulica is evaluating the possibility of extending this technology to remote communities thus ensuring potable water supply to the population in those areas.

Cuba to Increase Exports of Concentrated Juice

The Cuban economy is working on the export increase of concentrated juice, supported by the recuperation of different fruit plantations.

Specialists are predicting yields over 20 tons per hectare, also ensuring the domestic demand and import reduction.

Likewise, the country has the industrial capacities to take on the production of citrus and fruit concentrates while working on the increase of pineapple growing areas.

Plans for 2012 include sales to European markets; as well as the evaluation of new customers in the Caribbean.

The country has 100 cooperatives involved in the growing of fruit trees; and 42 of them are included in the sector development for this year.

Millions in Business Transactions at the Cuban Construction Fair

The 9th International Construction Fair, held in Havana, totaled over 50 million dollars in business transactions.

According to organizers, about 1,500 contact meetings and conversations for future contracts were carried out during the event; as well as the signing of several letters of intent.

The event was attended by 200 exhibitors from 26 countries, who presented their new products and services of the sector.

Authorities emphasized that the event eased the evaluation of options for construction material production in order to meet the needs of the industry and the population.

Parallel to the event, the 9th Technical and Scientific Conference, as well as the 33rd Pan-American Engineering Convention were held in order to increase integration, solidarity and innovation.

Cuban Railroad System Improved

The repair of railroad cars in Cuba is among the efforts being made to increase the use of this type of transportation.

In this sense, the specialized railroad workshop, located in the eastern province of Camagüey, finished the repair of 120 cars in the first quarter of 2012.

According to specialists, most of the repairs were done to freight cars, commercial flat cars and container cars, mainly intended for freight railroad transportation.

Each freight car has a load capacity of 60 tons, equivalent to more than two trucks.

The company’s plan is over seven million pesos as state budget contribution and they already have 1.7 million with profits of 68,000 pesos.
