The renovation of elevators in the residential sector in Havana is part of authorities’ programs to solve structural housing problems.

Executives from the Empresa de Montaje y Mantenimiento de Elevadores pointed out that 83 elevators were imported at a total cost of 4.4 million dollars.

They added that 32 elevators are being installed and eight are ready for operation.

According to the experts, that action improves the situation in the residential sector, where nearly 400 elevators need to be replaced due to deterioration.

Russian specialists are providing technical assistance to the Cuban company, as the new equipment and spare parts are being imported from that country.

I’ve never been in the Habana Libre hotel but I think I just might take the stairs. I doubt the elevator has had any quality upgrades since it was built in 1959.

I stayed at a casa particular in a Vedado apartment and took the elevator. It was so slow and rickety that I nearly broke out into a panic just going up to the fourth floor. Needless to say I walked up and down for the rest of my stay.

I would imagine that elevator sales, installation and repairs will be a great business when Cuba is serious about the quality of life and tourism in Havana.

when I stayed at the Tropicoco in Santa Maria (PLaya del Este), teh elevators were Chinese.  Although never broken, they were kinda rickety and I mostly walked teh 4 flights.  Agree a big market might be in teh making ...

The apartment building where my cousin lives in Vedado is not operational half the time, the other half is a real adventure.
