Cuba’s telecommunications sector has developed over the past few years, and the country will have 89.6 percent of digital telephone lines by this year’s end.

According to local authorities, public telephony has increased from 6,820 phones in 1994 to 34,125 in the first semester of 2005.

As a result, more than 150 million phone calls were made from January to July 2005, nearly the same number of calls made in 2004, when 160 million calls were reported.

The latest actions to improve telephony in Cuba include the installation of fixed telephone lines connected to the cell network in areas where cable networks do not exist.

That initiative, experts said, has benefited 51 municipalities in 13 Cuban provinces and is a good solution to technological difficulties or problems caused by the geographic location of some territories.

Executives from Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A. (ETECSA) also noted the computerization of commercial transactions, a wide range of new services for its clients and the operation of its Internet portal.
