Havana.- Urban agriculture, an initiative boosted in Cuba since 1987, closed operations last year with an output of 3.7 million tons of produce.
Authorities from the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that a 300,000-ton increase in production is expected in this year’s plan.

That way, they added, production will reach the four-million-ton mark in 2004 for the first time.

Growth will be based on both an increase in the area devoted to urban agriculture, totaling 45,000 hectares, and a rise in yield due to a better use of organic fertilizers, irrigation and local seed production.

In addition to increasing food offers, urban agriculture has had a great social impact, because it has created 320,000 jobs throughout the country.
