The Tampa Port Authority wants to trade with Cuba, to the dismay of some.

Port authority reps just returned from an informal trade mission to the island nation. They say the purpose of the trip was to learn about Cuba’s port structure and talk with shippers there. They wanted to make sure the port can take advantage of any future trade opportunities with Cuba.

“We’re not the first ones to invent the wheel,” said Joseph Diaz of the Tampa Port Authority Board. “In fact, 27 ports have visited down there, some of them from Florida. So how would we be serving the Bay area if we don’t at least go down and see what’s available?

To me, we would be shirking our duties to the port and the entire Bay area.”
