Cuban President Fidel Castro is in Jamaica to take part at the Summit of the PetroCaribe energy regional integration program.

The summit, which was called by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Jamaica’s Prime Minister Percival Patterson, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 6, marking the 190 anniversary of the historic ‘Letter of Jamaica’, written by Simon Bolivar in 1815 and in which the Latin American Independence Hero underscored the need for our region to conquer independence and reach full integration.

Also present at the event are Cuban Vice-president Carlos Lage Davila and Government Minister Ricardo Cabrisas who are scheduled to take part in discussions prior to the summit of heads of state and government.

The high level meeting is considered the scenario for important accords in the energy field, which will favor the economic development of the region.

PetroCaribe is a regional integration project in the field of energy, promoted by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and it includes the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Surinam, Saint Lucia, Belize, the Bahamas, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Venezuela and Cuba.
