Havana.- Pinar del Río, Cuba’s westernmost province, will benefit from digital telecommunications after the laying of a fiber optic cable is completed.
Specialized forces are installing the conducts in which the fiber optic cable will be laid to reach the provincial capital.
Among the advantages of the fiber optic infrastructure is the improvement of telecommunications, faster data transmissions and digital telephone networks to all municipalities in Pinar del Río province.
The new technology will also benefit 3,000 new telephone costumers in the province, in addition to increasing the country’s telephone density to 10 percent in 2005.
In just seven years, the Pinar del Río branch of Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Cuba S.A. (ETECSA) has installed 20,000 telephone lines. The company is currently embarked on meeting the communications needs in tourist destinations such as Viñales and the Guanahacabibes Peninsula.
